"Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you."
-Colossians 3:13

We forgive because God forgave us first

When He formed us in our mother's womb, He knew us. He knew when we would disobey, choose death not life and when we would stumble and fall.

And He still chose us. To forgive us. To make a way back to him.

We forgive because Jesus modeled it for us in the greatest act of love.

"Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'" -Luke 23:34

If we are to be more like Christ, we must practice forgiveness, not simply pay lip service to it.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” -Luke 6:37-38

We forgive because we are sowing seeds

When we forgive, we are investing in the kingdom and in our own hearts. Forgiveness is for our benefit as much as the one we forgive. When we command our heart to release holds on bitterroots we are bringing our soul (mind, will and emotions) into alignment with Holy Spirit.

We are obeying commands put forth by Jesus and we are cleaning out the junk in our hearts that keeps us from intimacy with the Father.

By sowing seeds of forgiveness, we prepare to harvest souls for the kingdom, rich soil in our families and become more like Christ.

"And as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, 'Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.'” -John 8:7

We forgive because we all need forgiveness at some point

The great news is that we do not need to come to God begging for forgiveness. He has already forgiven us for all sin, past and future. We need only receive forgiveness.

Guilt, shame and condemnation do not come from God, but from the accuser, the father of lies, God's enemy.

When we need forgiveness, Holy Spirit helps us to receive it.
